CNN —As one of the lead negotiators for students protesting inside the grounds of Columbia University, Mahmoud Khalil said his primary objective was to get the university to sever all financial ties with Israel. Khalil said Columbia never put anything in writing, instead making offers verbally. But without a firm promise, Columbia’s offer didn’t go far enough for Khalil and other protesters, since the university had previously rejected divestment proposals. Khalil said they then presented Columbia with another offer: Rather than dump Israel-tied investments, Columbia could instead divest from weapons manufacturing companies and any companies complicit in violating international law. “It was clear from the outset that The Spectator was really leading the coverage,” Summers told CNN by phone Monday. The photographs were captured by student journalists — including the cover image shot by freshman Stella Ragas — working in conjunction with New York photo director Jody Quon. Gathering reporting from campus for the issue, however, was not without its challenges for the student journalists. “There is significantly more trust of us than national outlets who parachute in and maybe don’t have the intimate knowledge,” Ramirez told CNN. In fact, when the encampments first propped up on campus, Ramirez told CNN that the student journalists were reluctant to retire for the night.

To the Editor:Re “After Arrests at Columbia, Students Face More Fallout” (news article, April 21):As parents of students suspended by Columbia University and Barnard College, we write to express our outrage. Among the evicted are lower-income students, students of color, students with disabilities and first-generation students. The security of students has been further compromised by vicious doxxing. We question the legality of much of what Columbia and Barnard have done in the last few days and fear for our children’s safety. While we parents come from a variety of religious faiths and social backgrounds, we are all invested in our children’s well-being and education.
